J.D. Wengerd gave Adam Hoover's Four Starz Signal a perfect trip in Friday's $6,500 Mares Open Handicap Pace at Northfield. The four-year-old Life Sign mare shocked at odds of 12-1. Favored Marvel Sahbra took the field through pedestrian fractions of 28.1, 58 and 1:27, with Passing Lane Penny in the pocket and Polo Jenn moving first up, followed by Cheetah Feet, who tipped three-wide just after the 3/4 mark. Meanwhile Four Starz Signal was locked in third at the rail and appeared doomed, but Passing Lane Penny failed to live up to her name, as she moved to the outside exiting the final turn and that opened up the passing lane for Wengerd as he steered his Andy Shetler-trainee passed a tiring Marvel Sahbra to get the win. Passing Lane Penny was second and Cheetah Feet finished third. Four Starz Signal has now banked over $25,000 in 2008, her first year of racing. The win gave Shetler a training double. (Northfield)
