Francam wins Exit 16W

February 26, 2005 Send To A Friend  | Print View

Francam got up in the last stride, edging Shattered Halo at the wire and capturing the $71,000 Exit 16W Series final in a stakes record 1:50.2 Saturday night at the Meadowlands.

Ron Pierce popped the earplugs on Francam as the gate opened and the 4-year-old Cambest gelding shot out from post nine, was three wide in the first turn and gained the top at the opening quarter in :27. David Miller and the favored I Am I Said came first-up to take the lead before the :54.2 half. Shattered Halo and John Campbell challenged for the lead at the 1:22.3 three quarters and down the lane, with Francam locked behind the two leaders. But in deep stretch, "I found some room and he did the rest," Pierece said of Francam's late surge that brought him the victory just after Shattered Halo had edged ahead of I Am I Said.

Francam's sweep of the series was his fifth victory of the year for trainer John Brown and owner Stephen Farrell.
