Since the introduction of free admission to the Harness Racing Museum and Hall of Fame on May 1, attendance has increased 277 percent compared to May 2006.
Within those improved figures, the number of children visiting the museum was particularly strong–-up 295 percent. The attendance figures exclude special programs and parties.
Museum Director Gail Cunard is optimistic the move to free admission will continue to be a strong attraction for the museum. "Last year, we had over 25,000 visitors to the museum and I believe we can double that number now that we're able to offer free admission," Cunard said. The museum recently received increased funding from the U.S. Trotting Association, which enabled the elimination of admission charges. Free general admission is extended to all ages at all times; this includes bus tour patrons (with advance reservation). Special programming, such as workshops, education department classes and tours that include scout patch programs and children's parties, continues to require a fee. The Harness Racing Museum and Hall of Fame is open daily 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is located at 240 Main Street, Goshen, N.Y., about 60 miles from New York City. (Harness Racing Museum and Hall of Fame)
