Freehold delays purse cuts

Return Home
January 29, 2008 Send To A Friend  | Print View

The Standardbred Breeders and Owners Association of New Jersey president Tom Luchento and Freehold Raceway management have negotiated a delay in an announced 20 percent cut in purses while both groups await action in Trenton to provide a purse supplement.

"While we have taken the Governor (Jon Corzine) on his worth that he wil provide New Jersey horse racing with a purse supplement in 2008 so the tracks can sustain or improve on the purse levels of 2007, the SBOA is working hard to ensure that this takes place,” said Luchento. “We are pursuing all possible efforts to prevent any interruption in the racing schedule.

“Last week Freehold announced a purse cut, but we spoke to general manager Don Codey and racing secretary Peter Koch and they have agreed to wait another week before implementing the cuts to give the process in Trenton a little more time,” Luchento explained.

Freehold issued a statement to its horsemen last week revealing a 20 percent cut in purses as well as dropping its richest overnight events–invitational paces, open mares and open trots.

There will be a special Standardbred Breeders & Owners Association of New Jersey meeting on Saturday, Feb. 2, at 6 p.m. in the back paddock at the Meadowlands.

All horsemen are encouraged to attend to discuss the future of racing in New Jersey. (SBOANJ)
