Purses at Freehold Raceway will reflect a seven percent increase when the next condition sheet is issued. The news comes after a three-year, $90 million purse supplement was approved by the state Assembly and now is before the state Senate. “Freehold has taken this step in response to the request from the Standardbred Breeders & Owners Association of New Jersey,” said SBOANJ President Tom Luchento. “This is the first step in restoring the purses to the level they were at prior to the cuts they made earlier this year.
“We have also been assured that there will be another bump in purses in another week or so,” Luchento noted. “This is a start in the right direction and one that comes prior to all the parties sitting down and negotiating the distribution of the funds that will come through the purse supplement. Once Freehold knows what it will receive from the purse supplement, we would anticipate additional increases as well.”
“We will be sitting down with Senator [Dick] Codey and Dennis Dowd of the New Jersey Sports & Exposition Authority to work on the distribution of the funds which will be split between the standardbred and thoroughbred industries,” Luchento said. (SBOA/NJ)
