A worker in Freehold Raceway's accounting department has been arrested and charged with theft for allegedly writing 77 checks totaling $77,564, money that should have been paid to the state as sales tax on the sale of horses. According to a story in Friday's Asbury Park Press, Joseph Biele, 39, has been charged with theft and failure to make disposition of funds over a six-year period, and according to a police detective he has confessed to the crimes.
The thefts allegedly occured between Aug. 28, 2001, and May 3, 2007. Biele's job was to ensure the state received the sales tax taken in when a horse was sold. An internal audit revealed the discrepencies, which then led to police involvement.
