Freestone, owned and trained by Ohio horseman Ron Randall, was the fastest of the New Jersey Sire Stakes 2-year-old trotting colt winners at the Meadowlands Thursday night, cruising to a 1:58.3 victory on the front end.
With David Miller driving, Freestone won his first pari-mutuel start after three baby races at The Meadows. Bred by Adelaide Skoglud, Randall bought Freestone at Harrisburg last fall for $22,000. The colt is a son of Yankee Glide and the Pine Chip mare Suwannee Springs.
A second NJSS colt division went to the Muscles Yankee colt Caviar Volo, owned by Tomas Bertmark and trained and driven by Jan Johnson, in 2:00.3
Three splits for freshmen pacing colts were contested and the winners were Count On Art (1:54.1), Allamerican Improv (1:56) and Lifesong (1:54.4.).
Count On Art, a colt by Artsplace, sprinted home in :26.4 to win by 4 1/2 lengths for driver David Miller and trainer Joe Holloway.
Allamerican Improv, a son of Artiscape out of a Jate Lobell mare, cruised to a 1:56 score with a stretch rally. John Campbell was in the sulky for Jim Graham, who trains and shares ownership in the colt, who won three baby races at Buffalo Raceway before shipping to the Big M.
Lifesong, a homebred owned by Judy Magie and Pine Creek Stables, got up in the final strides to earn a 1:54.4 speed mark.Tim Tetrick handled the driving for trainer Brian Magie.
