Freshman monkey wins

Thoroughbred racing may have its $16 million 2-year-old purchase The Green Monkey, but harness racing has its $3,500 yearling trotter Hundred Monkeys, already a freshman winner with a 20 3/4-length romp in a matinee contest at the Painesville, Ohio fairgrounds April 30.

Hundred Monkeys, a son of Windswept Balance out of the Wall Street Banker mare Private Bank, is owned by Linda Randall and trained and driven by her husband, Ron. He trotted the mile in 2:20.1 over a “good” racetrack.

The Randalls also won at Painesville with Rose Run Invader, an Armbro Laser half-sister to Ohio Sire Stakes champion filly Rose Run Hooligan 2, 1:58f ($142,990). Ron Randall directed Rose Run Invader to a 2:45 victory over three rivals despite the filly making an early break (two of her competition also went offstride at the start). Also winning for the Randalls at Painesville was M Fleet Feet, who trotted to a 2:30.4 clocking.

One other freshman performer currently shows a victory in 2006, with the effort earning the distinction of being the fastest. That honor belongs to the filly pacer Harmony Lynne, who scored in 2:02.4 in a qualifier Tuesday at Charlottetown Driving Park in the Maritimes. The daughter of Fit For Life out of Hornby Connie is a full sister to Ontario Sire Stakes winner Taylor Lynne p,3, 1:52.4 ($521,962).

Harmony Lynne was a $10,000(C) yearling purchase by owners Arthur Slack, Fred Brayford, George Harrison and Robin Raine. She is trained and driven by Earl Smith.

Million Dollar Cam colt Hi Dollar Cam was timed in 1:58.3 in a qualifier at Rosecroft Wednesday, finishing third behind $177,666-winning 3 year old Ireneonthemove.
