Divisions of the Kentucky Fair Stakes and an Open pace seemed to highlight the Red Mile’s opening night card on paper, but the fastest mile of the night was--unbelievably--produced by a 2 year old in a $2,200 conditioned race. My Old Friend John, a 2-year-old Cambest-Mystique Margie colt, easily defeated his elder counterparts by more than six lengths, in 1:53.2. The colt was completely wrapped up almost the entire length of the stretch by driver Trace Tetrick, incredibly still pacing his last quarter-mile in a blistering :27.1. My Old Friend John is trained by Eric Reese and owned by M&M Harness Racing of Nanuet, N.Y. The Cambest colt will inevitably be one of the favorites when the Kentucky Sire Stakes begin next Sunday. The opening night card was also heavily dominated by betting favorites, with six of the 12 races going to horses that paid $3 or less. (Red Mile)
