Freshman OSS action at Scioto Downs

The last round of Ohio Sires Stakes action at Scioto Downs took place on Saturday night, with a mixture of young veterans and newcomers visiting the winner’s circle. Two-year-old trotting and pacing colts were contesting their fifth and last OSS legs, with the $100,000 Championship Finals coming up at Northfield Park on Ohio Super Night, Saturday, September 1.

Rose Run Jeriah made it six in a row with a two-length score to start things off. The two-year-old son of Corleone has tasted defeat just once, when he was second in his pari-mutuel debut at The Meadows in June. Sam “Chip” Noble III drove for trainer Ronald Randall, who co-owns with Linda Randall, of Berlin Center, OH. Rose Run Jeriah went right to the lead and never looked back, winning in 1:59.4.

Sunland Dakota, another son of Corleone in the midst of a spectacular freshman season, posted a three-length victory in the second division. It was his eighth win in nine outings, and like Rose Run Jeriah, his only blemish is a second-place finish. David Myers drove for owner/trainer Michael Sowers of McArthur, Ohio. Sunland Dakota’s 1:59.4 clocking was a new lifetime mark.

Born To Bea Master sat in behind Southern Hooray, then went on by in the stretch to win in new best 2:00.2 by a length and a half for driver/trainer Ron Steck in the last trot division. The gelded son of Master Lavec, owned by George Green, Rhonda Heady, Arthur Peavy, and Bud Coughlin, has now won half of his eight starts.

Mai Tai Guy sat patiently in second before going to the lead in the homestretch in the first of the freshman pacing events. He went on to win by two and three-quarters in 1:55.4, dropping nearly five seconds off his previous best time. Trainer Rick Schaut, who co-owns the Towner’s Big Guy colt with his sister Trish Soulsby and Bruce Soulsby, was aboard.

C’mon Lew W followed cover in the outer tier to get the lead in his division, then drew off for a three-and-a-half length score in a brisk 1:55.2. Somewhat of a late bloomer, the son of Stand Forever didn’t make his first start until July 21, but then reeled off two in a row at Northfield prior to his Scioto debut. C’mon Lew W races as a homebred for Jerry Sommers, John Rhoads Jr. and Ronald Brechler. Sam Noble III drove for trainer Ray Paver.

Thistricksforyou yielded to Show Me Big Slick in the early going, then reclaimed the lead to post a half-length victory in 1:55.1, nearly six seconds better than his previous best time, in the third division. Sent off at odds of 11-1, the son of Yankee Cruiser was posting his second lifetime win from seven starts. Jim Daily drove for the sidelined Hugh “Sandy” Beatty and owner/breeder John Sugar of Columbus. (Scioto Downs)
