Indiana Downs played host to the second round of Indiana Sires Stakes competition for freshman filly pacers Tuesday, August 5. Ag-N-Au Bluegrass and VIP Filly claimed victory in the two divisions, each upending the favorites in the $15,000 contests. In the first race on the card, Ag-N-Au Bluegrass made her pari-mutuel debut a winning one, closing quickly in the final strides to nose out High Speed Life and Ricky Macomber Jr. in 1:55.2. Trent Stohler sat behind the filly, trained by John Merkel. Sapphire Martini and Jason Dillander raced third. The Whitefish Falls two year old, out of Direct Scooter mare Almahurst Redirect, is owned by Dr. Luel Overstreet. She was bred by Steve Wagler. VIP Filly snapped Silent Lea’s undefeated streak in the second $15,000 split, kicking home for driver Mark O’Mara in :28.2 and winning by two and one-half lengths. Silent Lea, who took command of the field after the quarter, suffered her first defeat in seven starts, taking the runner-up spot. Chevie Hot Wire finished third for trainer Ronnie Guhy. VIP Filly, by VP Finance, is now perfect in three starts. It was her first start for trainer Steve Gray after being purchased by L J Stone and Phillip Hawk.
