When Italy hosts the 2006 World Cup of Amateur Racing in late July, Lon Frocione will represent the United States in the prestigious world class driving competition. Amateur drivers from 14 participating countries will convene in Rome, Italy, from July 18 until July 23 and compete at racetracks in Rome and Naples.

“I’m overjoyed with the opportunity to represent my country in the World Cup,” Frocione said. “I’ve always enjoyed racing overseas and I especially liked racing in Italy because the competition is so keen.”

A veteran of international amateur racing, Frocione has driven in Berlin, Munich and Recklinghausen in German, in Belgium and Holland, in Austria and Sweden, and at the various racetracks throughout Italy.

Frocione, owner of Deli-Boy Inc. and Food For Thought in Solvay, N.Y., near Syracuse, has been a man for all seasons in the Standardbred industry. His involvement in harness racing covers over five decades and nearly all aspects of the sport. He currently serves as a director of the United States Trotting Association and is the District 8 chairman.

An owner of harness horses since the late 1950s, Frocione has had very good success with his racing stock. By his best recollection he’s owned over 50 horses that have won $100,000 or more and admits one of his biggest thrills was when his then 2-year-old pacer, Sportsmaster, won the Woodrow Wilson at the Meadowlands in 1991.

Currently Frocione is once again competing in the Billings Amateur Driving Series and when he travels to Italy for the World Cup he’ll have at least 186 driving victories on his resume.
