Fudgjoe had won six consecutive conditioned races, but was he ready for the bearcats in The Meadows’ Preferred Handicap Trot? The 4-year-old gelding dispelled any doubts about his credentials, as he captured Thursday’s $23,000 event in a sparkling 1:54.4. Perhaps the most impressive aspect of Fudgjoe’s streak—five of those wins came from post position eight or nine. He was on the engine again Thursday, gunning to the front for Bill Zendt and thwarting a serious third-panel challenge by the favorite, Show Me The Monet. Maingate Victory was a ground-saving second, 1 1/4 lengths back, with Dyno Trevor finishing third. David Knight trains Fudgjoe, a son of Crown Can, for Ernest Truffa Jr. Fudgjoe now has won nine times in 21 career starts. (The Meadows)
