Funeral set for Belote

Funeral arrangements have been announced for 51-year-old driver-trainer Hal Belote, who was killed in a racing accident Monday at Harrington Raceway.

Services will be held in his hometown of Williamstown, N.J. at Farnelli Funeral Home on Saturday, May 20. Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m., with the funeral following thereafter. Belote is survived by a wife and two children.

Memorial contributions are being accepted for the children. For interested parties that would like to make a contribution, please contact Jean Croom at Harrington Raceway by callling 302-398-7223.

Belote was a popular horseman on the Delaware circuit and winner of 1,986 races and more than $10.7 million in total purses in his 30-year racing career. He was a reputable trainer who had such top horses as Smashing Jane GT, Los Barvos, Shady Image and Saint Nicklaus. Belote's older brother Sam, is also a driver-trainer. Both learned the business from their father, veteran horseman John Belote Jr., who passed away in 2005.

Hal was honored with by a group of more than 100 horsemen Tuesday in the winner's circle at Harrington, prior to the start of the races.
