Future Destiny upset

May 12, 2006 Send To A Friend  | Print View

Nineteen-year-old Brandon Givens won his first-ever race at the Meadowlands and became the first teenager to score at the Big M since Mark Lewis won twice at the age of 19 in February 2001 when he directed The Queen Of Trash to an upset victory over odds-on choice Future Destiny in the first of two legs of the opening round of New Jersey Sire Stakes action for 3-year-old filly pacers Friday night.

Givens sent Queen Of Trash to the lead at the quarter and never looked back, holding off Future Destiny and driver Ron Pierce by a half-length in 1:52.1. Pierce got away fourth from the outside eight post with Future Destiny and tipped first-over around the final turn, but could only muster enough late rally to take runner-up honors. Eagle Boots was third for Yannick Gingras.

The lifetime-best win in the opening $39,050 NJSS split was the Cam Card Shark daughter's third straight and fourth in six starts this year. Givens shares ownership with trainer Les Givens, Donna Messick and Nanticoke Racing Inc.

The second $39,650 division went to Ideal Weather and driver Yannick Gingras, who took the early lead and never looked back, holding off a late bid by Bikini Bottom (Andy Miller) by about a length in 1:52.4. Public Life (Cat Manzi) was third.

A daughter of Western Ideal trained by Mickey Burke, Ideal Weather is owned by Sylvia Burke and Tom Cherichello. The win was her first of the year in three starts. She finished up her freshman campaign with a victory in the $85,000 Lou Babic final for fillies.
