Gabrielles Girl, a winner of three previous distaff features, returned to the winner's circle for the first time in 2010 to win the $27,000 Mares Open/Handicap pace on Tuesday, Feb. 16. at Dover Downs.
With meet-leading driver Corey Callahan at the controls, the Camotion-Cheryl's Place 5-year-old had just enough to hold off a strong stretch challenge by Apache Dame and Ross Wolfenden for a 1:53 triumph. Tom Kelly, who led the Minnesota Twins to World Series titles, and Margaret Mancini own Gabrielles Girl who is trained by Josh Green. She now has a win, second and two thirds in five races this year with earning of $27,660. Boots Place closed well for Eric Goodell to finish third.
Chris Sharpe's Cosmo Madness, with Jim Morand driving, stepped out of the claiming ranks to score a 1:56.4 victory in a $16,500 4-and 5-Year-Old Mares pace edging Fox Valley Patina (Tony Morgan) at the wire. Charlene Polk conditions the Three Olives-No Sweets Please 5-year-old, a two-time winner this meet. Ill Sting The Best (Mike Cole) was a close-up third. Ron Pierce pulled Shady Sabrina out of second on the final turn and quickly took the lead on the way to a second straight win in 1:54 to take the $18,500 pace for females. KDK Standardbreds and Golden Hour Stables owned the 8-year-old daughter of Cam's Dignity-Mymymysharona. Keystone Rhythm (Ross Wolfenden) was next. Boca Hanover (Frank Milby) was the show finisher. Another horse with big league sports affiliation, DeMorrio Williams of the Atlanta Falcons, and Teague Inc.'s 8-1 Firiel Hanover won the $15,000 distaff pace. Montrell Teague moved the Camluck-First Days Light seven-year-old into the lead before the half and then put away seven opponents with a 1:55 mile. Alpine Gold N (Tim Curtin) came on for second with Midges Lil Fortune (Corey Callahan) third. There were two $12,500 trots on the program. Daryl Bier and Brian Callahan's Mac Atack Mac rolled along the passing lane to win the first section in 1:59 for the Ripken's Victory-Katie cane gelding second consecutive win and third this meet. Jon Win (Vince Copeland) was a head back in second in front of Fivedollarsforsox (George Dennis). In the second $12,500 trot, it was all Ima Spur as Brad Hanners picked up his second win taking the Pegasus Spur-Fly Till Dawn gelding owned by Tom Ceraso to the front and played follow the leader to the finish line in 1:57. Valdez (Ton Morgan) and Mr. Beau Windswept (Vince Copeland) finished second and third respectively. Corey Callahan and Ron Pierce each notched a triple and Brad Hanners a double. (Dover Downs)
