Donegal Ago Go, driven by Roger Cullipher, made his first seasonal start a winning one in the first leg of The Ralph and Dorothy Rose Series at Hoosier Park Sunday, with the 3-year-old gelding finishing first in a record time of 1:59.4. Note To Groovy and Charlie Conrad made a snappy opening move to the first quarter, leading the field of eight by 2 1/2 lengths in :28.4. Notable Margie and driver Brian Barnes followed in second. Donegal Ago Go was behind them in third. The top three kept their tempo lively until the three-quarter mile mark when Donegal Ago Go found room on the outside and made a dash for the lead. Notable Margie and Savage Seducer, with Jim Shelton at the controls, followed suit as Note to Groovy began to lose energy. Donegal Ago Go maintained his charge to win by 2 3/4 lengths. Notable Margie, in second, and Savage Seducer, in third, rounded out the top three. The young son of A Go Go Lauxmont, Donegal Ago Go is owned by Robert Meek of Cadiz, Ky. He returned $9.80, $4.20 and $3.80.
Luckie Elmer, driven by Trace Tetrick, was able to race down the stretch to win the first division of the Ralph and Dorothy Rose Series.
Starting the race, ABs Super Hall, controlled by Mitchell Walker, took the early lead with Fresh And Famous, driven by Don Irvine Jr. and Blueridge Hush, commanded by Bobby Brower, close behind. Nearing the quarter-mile mark, with a time of :29, Fresh And Famous was able to pass ABs Super Hall for the lead. Down the backstretch, ABs Super Hall, Fresh And Famous and Blueridge Hush were competing for first, with Luckie Elmer, looming behind in fourth.
Rounding the three-quarter mile mark in a time of 1:30.4, Luckie Elmer made his move on the outside to contend for the top position. Racing toward the finish, Luckie Elmer was able to hold off Double A Gloria, driven by Don Eash, and First Notable Chip, controlled by Doug Rideout, to win by three-quarters of a length in a time of 2:00. Double A Glory and First Notable Chip finished second and third, respectively. The 4-year old Luckie Elmer, owned by James R. Bader and trained by Robert Wendel, earned his first victory in two attempts this year. The trotter has career earnings of more than $15,000.
The second leg of the Ralph and Dorothy Rose Series is Sunday, April 20. The $16,000 final is set for Sunday, May 4. (Hoosier Park)
