George Gilmour dies

Noted horseman and long-time trainer-driver George T. Gilmour of Margate, Fla., died Monday. He was 72.

 

Born in Lucan, Ont., Mr. Gilmour hailed from a family deep in Standardbred racing history both in the United States and Canada. As a driver he won 1,802 races and the horses he drove earned $4,209,143 in purse money. From 1991 when the U.S. Trotting Association began keeping trainer statistics, he sent out 95 winners that earned $373,532.

 

He was one of the leading drivers at Monticello Raceway from 1965 through 1978. One of his top horses during his career was the $1 million winning pacer Dexter Nukes.

 

Mr. Gilmour was one of the famed “Gilmour Brothers,” along with brothers William "Buddy," John and Lloyd. Buddy Gilmour is a member of the Hall of Fame and a career winner of 5,381 races and $44 million in purse money.

 

Mr. Gilmour was a lifelong member of the United States Trotting Association, a member of the FloridaStandardbred Breeders and Owners Association, the St. John's Masonic Lodge #1 in Wilmington, N.C., and a member of the Margate Elks Lodge.

 

He is survived by his wife, Patricia (Nee Campbell); a daughter, Kimberly Gilmour of Plantation; a son, Dean Gilmour (Cindy) of Monticello, N.Y.; grandchildren, Tyler Gilmour and Alexandra Catino; four sisters; three brothers; and numerous nieces and nephews.
 
There will be a memorial visitation starting at 2 p.m. with a service at 4 p.m. on Thursday, May 10, 2007, at the Kraeer Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 1 North State Road 7, Margate, Fla. A memorial service will be held in Monticello, N.Y. at a later date.

 

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition of Broward County, P.O. Box 350446, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. 33315.
