Georgia Pacific upsets

Voters looking to Monday night's $236,314 Matron final for 3-year-old colt and gelding pacers at Dover Downs to help them decide who to cast their ballot for divisional honors were thrown a curveball when Georgia Pacific came up a winner at odds of 14-1 in the world record-equaling time of 1:49.1.

Driver John Campbell moved Georgia Pacific to the lead at the half and then held off a late charge by Meadowlands Pace winner Holborn Hanover and driver George Brennan by a nose. Little Brown Jug winner Timesareachanging was third for Ron Pierce. Timesareachanging was part of a four-horse Perfect World Enterprises-owned entry and entrymates Rapid Dialing finished fourth, Breeders Crown champ Western Terror finished sixth, and Geartogear was last in the eight-horse field.

"This was one of the most competitive fields I've seen," said winning driver Campbell of the field that consisted of three millionaires. "Last week, (Georgia Pacific) was a little bullish when I drove him (racing off the pace), this week I knew I had to get him going at the half and he did the rest."

Georgia Pacific is owned by trainer Randy Bendis in partnership with John F. Campbell, Susan Castelli and William Varney. The gelded son of Western Hanover won for the 10th time in 2004 to increase his seasonal earnings to more than $700,000.
