The fleet-footed pacer Get A Cab and the industrious trotter Double D Fine became the initial two-time winners of the season at Vernon Downs on Friday night. Get A Cab captured the $8,500 eighth event, the week's Open test for female pacers, with a career-fastest 1:53.3 mile, while Double D Fine remained unbeaten in two season's starts after a life's best 1:57.2 performance in the evening's $4,410 fourth race.
Get A Cab's front-striding victory was her third in succession and fourth in 10 current outings for owners Linwood Higgins and William J. Donovan. The hard-hitting 4-year-old mare has already salted away $28,675 during the season, raising her lifetime earnings to nearly $116,000.
Ruel Goodblood Jr. did the teaming for trainer Paul Kelley as Get A Cab powered to the front from the outside eight post, led by two entering the homestretch and then drew off to post a four-length tally over Bet The Ranch.
The win was the second during the 10-race card for Kelley, who also enjoyed a 2:00.2 career-best tally by Marion Metro, with Goodblood steering, in Friday's first race. The Kelley Racing and Robert Rosenheim stables share ownership of the sophomore Conway Hall gelding.
Driver Jimmy Whittemore notched the first of his three straight Friday first-place finishes after hustling Double D Fine home a one-length winner over Power Eagle. Jennifer Signor owns the 5-year-old son of Angus Hall, while Jason Signor does the conditioning.
While registering the first driving triple of the meet, Whittemore won the fifth race with Joseph Burns's veteran trotter Right Mind, and the sixth with his dad's (Dennis) pacer My Girl Lora. The latter's convincing victory tied Get A Cab's mark for fastest mile of the night honors. (Vernon downs)
