Giant Diablo wins in North American debut

June 30, 2007 Send To A Friend  | Print View

Somewhat overshadowed in the “Donato debut domination” Friday at the Meadowlands was an excellent effort by Swedish superstar Giant Diablo who won her North American debut by a nose in 1:53.2 for David Miller with a last ditch, never-day-die rally in a $42,000 winners over trot.

The 7-year-old Supergill mare banked more than $1.5 million overseas facing male rivals for the most part. She shipped to New Jersey a month ago under the care of assistant trainer Malin Boman but missed the Titan Cup due to paperwork eligibility issues.

“She was so good and was just enormous the last 500 meters,” said Boman, who has traveled with and taken care of Giant Diablo since the mare was three. “She never gives up and is a fighter. I didn’t think she’d be so good having not raced in awhile and I expect her to move forward from here.”

Boman is trying her best to enjoy Giant Diablo’s final season of racing.  Current plans call for her to be bred in 2008. Hot stallion Andover Hall has been prominently mentioned.

One footnote: don’t expect any post-race interviews from Giant Diablo’s drivers. The mare reared straight up in the air in a brief winner’s circle appearance before setting sail toward the back paddock.

“She is terrible in the winner’s circle,” laughed Boman. “She’s tough and likes to do things her way. She wants to go back to the stables.”
