Gidde Palema almost ready

The 11-year-old Swedish and European champion Gidde Palema 1:52.3, a winner of more than $3 million, will soon return to the races after a period of breeding and winter training over a deep sand straightaway track.



Gidde Palema was given a faster workout on a conventional oval track this past week and his connections seemed pleased with the effort. He will get another track trip before racing, but he's smooth and alert and isn't showing any signs of his age, says Åke Svanstedt who has trained the son of 1992 Hambletonian winner Alf Palema.



Gidde Palema's 2006 debut is scheduled to take place at his home track of Axevalla on March 21. Then he'll compete in an elimination for the Olympic Trot. He is already qualified to compete in the Olympic Trot because of his previous victory in the race.



Gidde Palema's first offspring numbers about 60 and they are just now hitting the tracks. His first winner was Gidde TH, who is out of the Lindy's Crown broodmare Ala Delicious.
