Gift Kronos just missed equaling the track mark for an older trotting stallion at Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs when he won the $28,750 Open Handicap in 1:53.2 Tuesday night.
The 1:53.2 clocking was just a fifth of a second off the track record set by Armbro Barrister (Ray Schnittker) in June of 2006.
Marcus Johansson drove Gift Kronos and they left from the six post in the six-horse field with the opening quarter clicked off in :26.3 with Nicole’s Promise (Tom Jackson) on the front end followed by Howard Parker and Four Starz Credit and Mike Simons and Grain Of Truth.
Big Boy Lloyd (Jim Morrill Jr.) was the new leader at the half in :55.4 with Nicole’s Promise second and Four Starz Credit third. Sitting fourth was Gift Kronos. Johansson went first up down the backside and quickly caught and passed the top horses to take control of the race with the three-quarters clocked in 1:22.3.
Gift Kronos held off Nicole’s Promise, who came up from Pocono Pike (passing lane) to finish second with Grain Of Truth third. Gift Kronos has won his only two starts of the year at Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs and both came in the open handicap trot condition.
This was the winner’s fourth win in 10 starts in 2009. (Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs)
