Gingras blows whistle at MR

In late September Daryl Thomas was watching races from Grand River Raceway in Canada and saw a horse that he just had to have. Thomas excitedly contacted his trainer, Sarita Mosher, and together they went across the border and plunked down $7,.500(US) for Whistle Bear, a 5-year-old Armbro Operative gelding with decent credentials.

In his first start for his new owner Whistle Bear breezed to a new lifetime record of 1:54.2 at Freehold Raceway with Yannick Gingras at the controls. Since then the pacer has notched seven wins in 10 starts for Thomas.

His latest triumph came on Tuesday at the hands of the best pacers on the grounds at Monticello Raceway again with Gringras in the pilot seat. ogether they rumbled to a 1:54 victory in the tracks $15,000 Preferred Pace.

Sent off as the 1-2 favorite from post position two, Gringras put the pacer on the front end and, though he was challenged every step of the mile, when Whistle Bear got to the three-quarter pole Gingras tapped him once and they drew off to a four-length lead, which was expanded another length before the photo finish camera clicked.

Second place went Jayees Albert N, in rein to Jimmy Devaux and Eric Goodell guided the third-place finisher Casimir Bad Boy.

“I don’t think he’s ever been better than he was today, “ driver Gingras said about Whistle Bear. “I won with him in :54-and-a-piece at Freehold a while back but he was better today than he was then. He really loves a half-mile track and I believe he could have shaded 1:53 today if he had to.”

The victory was Whistle Bear’s ninth of the season and increased his seasonal bankroll to over $46,000. He paid just $3 for win.

And Tuesday must have been dead-heat day at the Mighty M when a total of four were recorded. In the 13th race there were actually two dead heats; one for win between Health Is Wealth N (Billy Parker Jr.) and Fresco Kid N (Larry Stalbaum) and another for fourth between Golden Lightning (Jimmy Marohn) and Roxie’s Little Man (Jimmy Devaux).

In the 12th race, Art’s Tiger (Parker) and Jokers Jackpot (Stalbaum) hit the wire simultaneously for third place and in the first race there was a dead heat for second between Falcor N (Bruce Aldrich Jr.) and Shinning Jesse (Stephane Bouchard). (Monticello)
