Givens a bully at Dover

December 18, 2006 Send To A Friend  | Print View

Brandon Givens drove Bully McCool N to a 1:51.4 victory in the $13,500 Delaware pace, the Sunday feature race at Dover Downs. It was Givens' second winner of the night. In addition, the sport's leading dash-winning driver, Tony Morgan, had three winners.

Bully McCool N left like a bullet for Givens to get the first lead, and never relinquished it en route to his fourth win of the year. The Miles McCool gelding cut all the fractions and opened a two-length lead heading for home. Ima Prince Too (Morgan) enjoyed a perfect seat behind the winner from the start, but could get no closer than a half-length at the wire. Tandar Hanover (George Dennis), the only 3 year old in the field, finished third.

In a $13,000 pace for horses and geldings, Morgan notched his third win on the program by driving Streetcar, an altered son of Artsplace to a 1:53.3 victory, holding off a late-storming Solid Hanover, who came within a whisker of the winner at the wire. Streetcar is a new purchase for owner-trainer Arty Foster Jr., and won for the fifth time this season. Vasvixen N (Jim Morand) took show money.

Nathan My Boy won the $10,000 feature trot with Morgan at the controls in 1:57. Owned by Fred Hertrich and the Brooks and Green Racing stables, the win was the first of the meet for the 4-year-old gelding.

Roger Plante has become the "master of the longshot." Plante, who seems often overlooked by the wagering public, racked up another pair of high-priced payoffs. First, Plante rushed through the passing lane, driving Herman and Lyn Drenth's homebred Major Cammarano to a 1:58.1 victory in an $8,900 Delaware trot, at 21-1 odds. Then Plante sat second with Kay Gannon's Flying Spirit until the top of the stretch, and then pulled out to beat Swing Master (George Dennis) by a neck in 1:54 in a $20,000 claiming allowance, this time at 17-1.
