Golden Receiver led every step of the way in winning the featured Open Handicap Pace on Saturday night at Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs. The race carried the evening’s top purse of $28,000.
Leaving from the five post in a field of eight at odds of 6-1, Golden Receiver, a 5-year-old gelding from the barn of trainer Mark Harder, was sent right to the front by driver Joe Pavia Jr. None of his competition was able to pass him from there, and he crossed the line three lengths in front in a time of 1:50.3, matching the fastest time at Pocono so far in 2010. Western Bay finished second while Mucho Sleazy was third.
The gelding, sired by Village Jove and fresh off a stint at the Meadowlands, won for the third time in 13 tries in 2010. With the winner’s share of the purse, Golden Receiver’s career earnings soared past $219,000. (Pocono)
