It was good news for Good News Lady as the 3-year-old filly pacer won the first heat of the $300,475 Jugette Wednesday afternoon at the Delaware, Ohio fairgrounds, in 1:53.1, the first win of the year for the daughter of Western Ideal.
A field of nine lined up behind the gate--Ideal Morning was scratched "sick" earlier in the day--and at the outset the inside four horses battled for position. Coming out of the first turn the 6-5 favorite Good News Lady had the lead for Greg Grismore, with Dreamlands Latte (David Miller), Up Front Bethann (Dave Palone) and Cartniverous (Eric Goodell) lining up behind.
Good News Lady led to a quarter of :26.2 and then Tim Tetrick pulled Thong from fifth on a first-over journey. Good News Lady led to a :55.2 half as Thong began to come up on the outside. The three-quarter pole was reached in 1:24 as Thong began to give way.
Around the final turn Good News Lady and Dreamlands Latte separated themselves from the rest of the field, but the former was game and held off her rival by a half length. Thong also remained game and was able to hold onto third.
"That's the first time I've ever had her on the front end," Grismore said afterward. "We thought that at Delaware and the short stretch you wanted to be up front."
Trained by Jimmy Takter, Good News Lady is owned by Brittany Farms, Val D'Or Farms and Christina Takter. Although she had been winless in a dozen starts this year coming into the Jugette, she had seasonal earnings of $360,885. She was the runner-up in the Mistletoe Shalee in early August at the Meadowlands and was coming off a third-place finish Sept. 7 in the Nadia Lobell at The Red Mile..
