Good times for Campbell?

Trainer and co-owner Bob McIntosh says Campbell Hall has given an honest effort on the racetrack from day one, and the Hall of Fame conditioner says the well-bred sophomore colt is on the improve. A half brother to 2003 Trotter of the Year Cantab Hall, the first freshman to ever be so honored, Campbell Hall has drawn post eight in the first of two Goodtimes eliminations Saturday night at Woodbine with driver Steve Condren, taking on the likes of reigning divisional champ Chocolatier.

Campbell Hall was a $125,000 yearling purchase by McIntosh, CSX Stables and Michael Kohler from breeders Walnut Hall Ltd. and Berto Stable. The son of Striking Sahbra is out of the dam Canland Hall, a full sister to two-time Breeders Crown champion Cameron Hall 1:53.4 ($1,816,236).

Last year at two, Campbell Hall won twice in 13 starts while competing primarily in Ontario Sire Stakes (OSS) events. He missed a check just once, earning $110,814 for his connections. His career-best effort came in an OSS Gold elim when he trotted to a 1:59.2 victory.

This year Campbell Hall has made three starts, improving from an eighth-place finish in his debut to a third-place finish in a OSS Gold elim at Woodbine to a second-place finish in the $130,000(C) final June 3, falling a half-length short of finding the winner’s circle.

“He’s a nice, capable colt. He was a big growthy colt last year and he accomplished quite a bit for as growthy as he was,” said McIntosh. “This year he’s filled out and is a little stronger. He doesn’t make many mistakes and always gives an honest effort.”

As for having Campbell Hall taking on Chocolatier in the Goodtimes elims, McIntosh said with a laugh, “That will be fun, but we’ll settle for a piece. I’m learning a little more about (Campbell Hall) every week, so we’ll see.”
