Go On BB takes Genesis final

June 24, 2007 Send To A Friend  | Print View

A sloppy track proved no match for sophomore pacer Go On BB. The Frank Baldachino-owned filly captured the $40,000 Genesis Series final Saturday evening in a stakes record 1:53 victory. The win marked the ninth in 10 seasonal starts.

“She’s such a tough filly,” said Mickey Burke Jr. “She showed her class tonight.”

Starting from post position three, the 1-5 favorite and driver Ricky Macomber Jr. raced second early as Parking Place and trainer Don Eash fired for the lead from post eight. Shortly after passing the quarter pole in :26.4, Macomber moved Go On BB to the lead and the tandem reached the half in :57.

On the move from fourth, Martha’s Revenge and Don Irvine Jr. would shuffle the leader to the two hole once they took command. But their time on the point would be short-lived. Leading by a length and a half at three quarters, Martha’s Revenge would relinquish the lead to Go On BB in the stretch as the winner dashed home in :27.2 to win by five and one-quarter lengths. Lady Jay and Neil Coleman were second and Francie’s Dream, driven by Jay Cross, was third.

“She still had plenty left in the tank,” Macomber explained. “She’s good on any track. She’s an all-around mare.”

Go On BB established a new Genesis Series stakes record, eclipsing the previous mark of 1:53.4 established in 2000 by Giggles The Clown. The Dontgetinmyway filly has won 16 of 20 career starts while accumulating nearly $195,000 in career earnings.

Big Z Wisdom Wins Genesis Series Trot
In the $40,000 Genesis Series final for sophomore trotting fillies favorite Big Z Wisdom gutted out a close victory over ABC Bay Bee in 1:58. Despite making a break in her last start over a sloppy track, the Big Z Crown filly remained flat to win by a half length for trainer Brooke Nickells.

“The rain really tightened up the track, but we didn’t know how to rate it,” Nickells commented. “The track was stinging her. She was having a little trouble. Just looking at her you could tell.”

Owned by Big Z Stables of Montague, N.J., the three year old had won five of seven starts entering the $40,000 final. Starting from post two, driver Joe Essig Jr. moved the filly out fifth in the field of nine as Ideal Queen and Irvine set the fractions. Racing to the half Essig began to move Big Z Crown forward, advancing first over in second by the three-quarter-mile marker.

In the stretch the favorite dispatched the leader before holding off a rally by ABC Bay Bee and Joe Putnam. Hannah Coe and Mark O’Mara were third. Unraced at two, Big Z Wisdom has earned just over $47,000 this season.

“She showed some heart tonight,” Nickells concluded. “She just kept digging in.”
