Gordon gears for contest

April 01, 2005 Send To A Friend  | Print View

Hi! My name is Gordon Waterstone and I'm a handicapper--at least I think I'm a handicapper. I'll find out just how good I am as I travel to the Meadowlands Saturday to compete in the National Harness Racing Handicapping Championship.

I've been the author of tip sheets sold at Hazel Park and for one spring at The Red Mile, so I'm pretty sure I can pick some winners. My major claim to fame is one night at Hazel when my "Blue Sheet" had a $100 horse picked right on top. It seemed nearly everyone at the track thanked me that night for giving them that horse. Any chance of lightning striking twice and I find a 50-1 shot Saturday?

After watching the races last weekend and then a tape again Thursday night at home to review one more time, I'm just about ready to take on the field. It's already going to be a night of sacrifice as the contest goes straight up against the NCAA's Final Four and it was also a night of sacrifice Thursday as I gave up going out to one of my favorite hangouts in order to do some of that last-minute homework.

Will the preparation help? I sure hope so. The Meadowlands races are already tough enough to handicap and it looks like things might get just a little bit tougher as the weather forecast calls for rain and wind. Wonder what kind of track bias that will lead to?

I also looked at the five mandatory races that will have to be handicapped. Wish me good luck trying to find the winner in that first race from Cal Expo, I'll need it.
