Governor says no slots at Plainridge

A published report in Monday's Sun Chronicle in Massachusetts says that Gov. Deval Patrick will not recommend putting slot machines in at Plainridge Racecourse, or the states three other struggling racetracks, when he makes his proposal to expand gaming in the state.

Instead, according to an Associated Press report, he wants to auction three regional casino licenses that would allow casinos to be built in the western, southeastern and greater metropolitan Boston regions of the state.

The news was especially disappointing to state Rep. Richard Ross, R-Wrentham, who has been lobbying for slots at Plainridge.

“I’m very disappointed,” Ross said in an interview. “I think it could be a nail in the coffin for an industry that has been clinging to the hope that they would someday be able to expand gambling.”

Plainridge president and CEO Gary Piontkowski was not available to comment for The Chronicle’s story.
