The Art Major colt Santanna Blue Chip used a second-over trip to win the $731,700 Governor's Cup at Woodbine Saturday night, turning in a 1:53.1 effort on the windy night. Roberts Rage finished second, giving trainer Carl Jamieson a sweep of the top two positions. But it ws a bittersweet night for Jamieson as just one race earlier his 2-year-old trotter Mr Mission died of heart failure just before going to the gate for the Valley Victory Trot.
As for the Governor's Cup, Jody Jamieson, Carl's son, worked out a second-over trip with Santanna Blue Chip, following the cover of Keystone Horatio until early in the stretch drive. Dali, the betting favorite, had taken control of the race before the half (reached in :55.1) and still led at the three-quarter mark (1:23.2).
Santanna Blue Chip won his Governor's Cup elim the previous Saturday, taking a lifetime best of 1:51.4 when he eked out a neck score over Lonestar Legend, who wasn't a factor in the final.
The Governor's Cup victory was the fourth in 10 starts for Santanna Blue Chip, who is owned by a partnership that includes Carl Jamieson.
