Grand Circuit at Pocono

July 08, 2006 Send To A Friend  | Print View

Two-year-old trotting fillies and three-year-old pacing colts and geldings took center stage at Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs Saturday afternoon, as they competed in the W.N. Reynolds Memorial Stakes to kick off Grand Circuit week at the track.

Pocono-based driver Mike Simons managed a win in both classes. He drove 2-year-old Shroom, trained by Fred Grant, to a front-stepping trot victory in 2:01. Then he added a pacing win in upset fashion with Runover Again, a colt from the barn of Roland Mallar, in the day’s fastest time of 1:51.

The other two divisions of the three-year-old paces were won by Wiggle Out Of This, driven by Kevin Sizer and trained by Joe Holloway, and Sand Gogh, driven by Tony Hall and trained by Tye Loy. Each won in 1:51:3. Sand Gogh’s win came at the expense of Little Brown Jug hopeful Armbro Damien, who had won six straight, but went on a break around the final turn.

Pampered Princess set the standard for the trotting fillies, winning the day’s first division in 1:59, a time that stood at day’s end as the fastest of the trots. Marcus Johansson drove for trainer Jimmy Takter. Other winners: Pacific Edge, trained and driven by Ed Lohmeyer, in 2:00:4; Missymae Bluestone, trained by Brett Bittle and driven by Tom Jackson, in 2:01:1; and Classical Mary, trained by Richard Gillock and driven by Dave Palone, in 2:01.
