After Tactical Touch and Corey Callahan cut the early fractions, Mary Smith’s Grant ($3) took the lead at the head of the stretch, drawing clear to a three-length victory in the final of the General George Washington late-closing series on Wendesday afternoon at Harrah’s The 3-year-old son of SJ’s Caviar got away fourth, being overtaken early by a leaving Tactical Touch, AJ’s Black Belt (George Brennan), and Snappy Salute (Jeff Fout). Second-choice West Brook (Andy Miller) made an untimely break after the start, giving driver Cat Manzi a bit of breathing room. Grant overtook Snappy Salute between calls, settling in third at the half, three lengths off leader Tactical Touch who trotted past a :57.1 half mile.
Up the backstretch, Manzi pulled with the New Jersey-bred colt, advancing to within a length and a half of the leader in the far turn. “He was just a little better this week, and I got him a good trip”, said Manzi of Grant. With three-sixteenths of a mile to trot, Grant came out of the pocket and overtook Tactical Touch, leading by a neck at the head of the stretch before drawing clear by three at the line. He trotted a final quarter of :28.1 en route to earning a lifetime mark in the 1:55.1 performance.
Tactical Touch ended up second, with Twin B Tween (Yannick Gingras) third, and Snappy Salute fourth.
“The trip worked out nice, and there were a few other things that went my way,” added Manzi. While Manzi won the featured General Washignton, Tim Tetrick and Tony Morgan led all drivers in wins for the day, turning in four each. (Harrah's Chester)
