Gregory set to return

Return Home
April 14, 2005 Send To A Friend  | Print View

Jeff Gregory has told The Horseman he will climb back into the sulky this weekend for the first time since suffering a broken hip in a race accident at Freehold Jan. 14. The 38-year-old driver had a career year in 2004, winning 581 races and more than $4.5 million in purses, but after posting 27 wins in his first 157 starts this year, has been sidelined since the spill.

Gregory said he has one qualifying drive at the Meadowlands Friday morning and was then listed on four or five horses at Yonkers Saturday night. He said he was expecting to also pick up some drives earlier that day at Freehold.

"One trainer (Matthew Meideros) at Yonkers called me and listed me on four horses Saturday," said Gregory Thursday morning, April 14. "He had heard I was getting close to returning. A few people started calling me when it spread through the grapevine."

Gregory received approval of his doctor to return to the sulky after an appointment Wednesday, April 13. "I feel tremendous; it's healed good and I'm walking good," he said. "I'm just anxious now that I'm able to get around. I want to start doing something."
