Gregory wins qualie debut

Driver Jeff Gregory, out of action since breaking his hip in a race accident at Freehold Jan. 14, made a successful return to the sulky Friday morning. Behind Give Me Credit in the first qualifier at the Meadowlands, Gregory directed the 3-year-old gelded son of Credit Winner to a wire-to-wire 2:00 victory.



"It was good; no problem," Gregory told The Horseman shortly after his victory. "A lot of people were surprised to see me."



Gregory said he has high hopes for Give Me Credit, a $56,000 yearling purchase. Last year in five starts overall, Give Me Credit included a second and third in New York Sire Stakes events. "Hopefully we're going to race him once and then race him in the Dexter Cup (at Freehold) if he's good enough. That's what we're shooting for," Gregory said.
