Group wants NY casino shut

Published reports state members of Upstate Citizens for Equality, which won a lawsuit that led to the subsequent ruling by the Supreme Court last month that Turning Stone casino is operating illegally, will head to court again to ask a judge to shut down the casino until a new agreement between the state and the Oneida Indian Nation is reached.

Upstate Citizens for Equality president Scott Peterman told the Syracuse Post that he expects the lawsuit to be filed soon, and that the original one did not include a request to shut the casino down because the group did not believe it needed to ask for that to happen.

"We were naive enough to believe that once we determined it was illegal, lo and behold, our politicians would do their job and uphold the law," Peterman told the newspaper.

Turning Stone casino is just a few miles from Vernon Downs, which recently reported substantial losses despite the recent opening of its slots facility, and that it could close if the state of New York does not step in with some sort of subsidy or relief.
