Harness racing icon Lou Guida is recovering from a serious staph infection and reaction to the medicine used to treat the infection following knee surgery, a condition that became so dire a priest was called in to administer last rites.
Guida's surgery took place at Indian River Medical Center, near Vero Beach, Fla. The initial surgery was deemed a success, however when he developed the complications his condition turned serious before the miraculous turnaround. Guida is now hoping to return home by Tuesday, July 10.
From the 1970s until the early 21st century when he went into semi-retirement, Guida, a former Merrill Lynch executive, was a dominant force in harness racing. He syndicated legendary Niatross for a record $10 million. Some of his long list of outstanding horses include international champion trotter, Mack Lobell, the great pacer Nihilator, renowned trotter Pine Chip, standout female pacers Miss Easy and Immortality, and major stakes winning pacers In The Pocket, Sandman Hanover and Jake And Elwood. All of these were winners of more than $1 million.
Guida also has bred and races horses in Italy. (with files from Marv Bachrad)
