Guy upsets Tweedle Dum

July 06, 2006 Send To A Friend  | Print View

Guy Gets Girl put an abrupt halt to Tweedle Dum’s seven-race winning streak, collaring that one in the final yards to score a half-length victory in Pompano’s $10,000 Preferred I Handicap trotting feature on Wednesday night in 1:55.2.

Driven by Bruce Ranger for owner Paul Ministrelli of Brighton, Mich. and trainer Tom Beckette, Guy Gets Girl burst out the gate from post five and hung Tweedle Dum (Wally Ross, Jr.) through a stinging opening quarter of :27.3.

Once “Junior” got Tweedle Dum to the front, he tried to rate his charge and posted subsequent fractions of :57.4 and 1:27, only to have Guy Gets Girl outbrush him in a sprint to the wire.

It was the sixth win of the year for Guy Gets Girl, a 7-year-old son of Keystone Nordic, and sent his yearly bankroll to $41,420. His lifetime bounty now stands at $211,491.

In the $8,250 Preferred II Trot, U Toe The Bike, owned by Jean Bryer of Pompano Beach, scored a handy wire-to-wire victory in 1:57.1…also for the Ranger-Beckette driver-trainer team.

This 6-year-old gelded son of Corleone took the lead a few steps out of the gate and, after putting the field in its place with a :28.4 opener, Ranger put the brakes on his charge, clicking off a half in a pedestrian :59.4. From there, U Toe The Bike trotted a final half in :57.2 to seal the deal.

For U Toe The Bike, it was win number seven in 23 starts and sent his yearly earnings to $32,919.

The pocket-sitting Beer Thirty (Wally Hennessey) was second and Mister Showbiz (Lazar Popov) finished third.

Though one winning streak was stopped on Wednesday night, another one continued.

The $4,000 claimer Thomas Killean, who, until June 7, hadn’t won a race since September of 2004, won his fourth in a row—all for driver-trainer Andy Santeramo—this one in 1:55.4, tying a mark he established just one week ago.

Julie Bishop of Pompano Beach owns this 6-year-old son of Run The Table.

In Florida Amateur Driving Club action, Buddywhathisname, perfectly rated by Dan Hennessey (Wally’s older brother), showed his heels to the competition with a handy, 2 1/2-victory in 2:00.3.

Buddywhatshisname, a 9-year-old son of Balance of Trade, earned his fourth win of the year for the Trot Time Farm of Savannah, Ga.

Swiss Laux was second in that mile, while Golly Miss Molly was third.

Bruce Ranger led all drivers on the 12 race program with five wins, pushing his summer meet total to 51. Wally Hennessey is next with 36.
