Hana Hanover, who paced to a world-record equaling 1:49.2 victory last fall at The Red Mile as a 3 year old, equaled that clocking Saturday as a 4 year old in winning the $86,300 Allerage final for mares over that same racetrack. Brian Sears was in the sulky as the daughter of Western Hanover showed extreme gameness down the stretch to earn the hard-fought victory.
Ideal Weather and driver Yannick Gingras took the early lead and reached the opening quarter first in :27.2 The Tim Tetrick-driven Tidewaterdragonfly was then up to take the lead by the :53.3 half, and then Sears had Hana Hanover first-over around the final turn and at the 1:21.1 three quarters.
Hana Hanover was able to clear to the lead turning for home and then had to fend off the determined bid by Ideal Weather to reach the wire in front. Martha Maxine tried a valiant late rally but that bid also fell short and she had to settle for third for Andy Miller.
Owned by David Reid, David McDonald, Stan Klemencic and Malcolm Man Son Hing, the daughter of Western Hanover won for the third time in 15 starts this year, increasing her seasonal earnings to more than $236,000. She is trained by Mark Steacy.
