The Cal-Expo State Fair harness meet concluded on Thursday, Sept. 21, with a sharp increase in total handle.
Despite racing 26 days this season, versus 24 last year, the average nightly handle rose to $775,918, a hefty 22.41 percent increase over the $633,862 average posted last season.
On track handle dropped 15.92 percent to $53,433. Advance deposit and telephone wagering rose 80.77 percent to $79,697. California in state wagering rose 4.95 percent to $474,262, and out of state wagering rose a whopping 126.74 percent to $168,524 nightly.
"We moved our weekend post time later to get away from Del Mar, and this clearly helped the total handle, but negatively effected the live on track results," said Chris Schick, general manager of Sacramento Harness, operator of the state fair meet for the first time this year. "We bucked a downward trend in fair racing in California this year, and overall, we are very pleased with the results," Schick concluded.
