New York lawyer Paul Kellerman has been sentenced to two years in prison for conspiracy to committ mail fraud in a scandal that involves the Zdravo Maria Stable that raced Standardbreds on the East Coast.
According to reports, Paul Kellerman's twin brother, Eric, stole money from his clients' real estate escrow funds and used it to fund the stable, which has owned several horses over the years, including at one time the $845,000-winning Life Sizzles. Eric Kellerman then gave the money to Paul and his partners in the stable, sisters Anne and Mary Martin, who he said told him that God wanted to give him the money.
Paul Kellerman the the Martins pressured Eric Kellerman to give them the money by using religion from 1998-2005, and then used the money to fund the stable as well as pay off Paul Kellerman's gambling debts and make home renovations. The sisters have not been charged with any crime, and Eric Kellerman has received a year-and-a-day jail sentence for mail fraud and ordered him to repay more than $800,000 to the state bar's Lawyers Fund for Client Protection.
