Harrah's Chester's open pace is foiled again

Returning to Harrah's Chester Casino and Racetrack after taking the Hudson Valley Invitational, Foiled Again ($3.60) withstood heavy pressure from Palone Ranger and held off a late charge from Philos Hanover to take Sunday afternoon's featured $40,000 Open Pace.

Allowing Philos Hanover (Cat Manzi) and Michael's Marvel (George Brennan) to contend the pace, Yannick Gingras sat just behind the front pair with Foiled Again before brushing to the front past a :27 opening quarter. "I figured a few horses were going to leave, so I took back a bit and moved to the front after they settled in," said Gingras. "I just wanted to make sure I wasn't going to get into a speed duel."

The 4-year-old gelded son of Dragon Again was unopposed on the lead through a half of :55.2, before Palone Ranger applied steady first-over pressure up the backstretch. Despite a relatively moderate third quarter of :28.2, Palone Ranger posed a significant threat near the top of the stretch, reaching the leader's throatlatch before Foiled Again turned away his challenger.

"I didn't have to work that hard to get to the front, and when Palone Ranger came up, my horse grabbed in, and it was a sprint for the last eighth," continued Gingras. "He's a good horse; he likes to race."

Despite a tough duel with Palone Ranger, Foiled Again also held off a strong challenge from Philos Hanover for a 1:51 mile. Philos Hanover closed in the open stretch to finish second, while Michael's Marvel finished a ground-saving third. (Harrah's Chester)
