At an age when most are enjoying their retirement years, Harry Harvey keeps on going.

The 82-year-old harness racing legend will return to the sulky when he drives Timothy Rooney’s 2-year-old filly Lisbella in the third race at Harrah’s Chester Casino & Racetrack on Thursday, Sept. 28. Harvey drove Lisbella, who he also trains, to a convincing score in a qualifying race at Harrah’s Chester on Friday, Sept. 22.

Harvey began his career as a trainer-driver in 1947. As a 29-year-old in 1953, Harvey piloted Helicopter to victory in the Hambletonian, the sport’s most prestigious event, and would go on to manage the careers of some of the sport’s equine greats, including Adios and Albatross. He was inducted into the Harness Racing Hall of Fame in 2002.

Harvey still trains a small stable of horses near his Columbus, New Jersey base and occasionally partners his charges during their afternoon races. This will be his first drive of the current year. He won one of three starts as a driver in 2005.

Harvey is optimistic about Lisbella’s chances.

“I’ve certainly gotten my share of driving in over the years,” Harvey says, “but I really think she’s got some serious speed and has a chance to be a nice horse. If she races well and tries hard down the stretch, I’ll be happy.”
