Has An Attitude survived a late scare but remained undefeated this season with a narrow 1:52.4 victory in Monday's $49,300(C) Ontario-sired Spring Series final for 3-year-old fillies at Mohawk Racetrack. The daughter of No Pan Intended-So Fresh was riding a perfect five-for-five streak in 2008 into Monday's contest and was expected to have any easy time of it. However, the final outcome was in doubt right up until the final strides. Driven by Mark MacDonald, Has An Attitude left for position from post two and settled in fourth early as Changing Gears blasted to early command and put up the first fraction of :27.2. The leader remained unchallenged through the opening half of :56 with longshot Paper Cut sitting in second and Im Just Special following in third. At that point, MacDonald brought his charge to the outside and started to advance in the third quarter. Changing Gears, however, was strong and held a 1 1/2-length advantage at three-quarters in 1:24.3. Has An Attitude was able to sustain her first-over rally as the field turned for home and eventually drew even with the pacesetter. Not far behind, Im Just Special, driven by Jody Jamieson, shook loose and began to close. At the finish, Has An Attitude stayed game and hung on by just a neck to run her season's unbeaten streak to six. Im Just Special fell just short in her late bid while Changing Gears held on for the show spot. The winner returned a popular $2.50. "She's still pretty green, that's only about her eighth start," said driver MacDonald of the hard-fought victory. "She cleared halfway down the lane and kind of lost sight of the horses and lost her attention a little bit. She still had lots lets in the tank, though. She's a nice filly." Winning trainer Erv Miller was pleased with the win but says there is still room for improvement. "We're constantly working on her to keep her interest up because she does get a little lazy," he said. "We'll probably change her bridle a little to help that." The lion's share of the purse boosted Has An Attitude's bankroll to just over $54,000(C) for Brittany Farms of Versailles, Ky. She is expected to start next in Ontario Sire Stakes action. (WEG)
