It came as no surprise that favorite Hat-ies RC won the $16,000 Tubby Trimble final at Hoosier Park Wednesday, May 17; it was the way in which he stormed to victory. The Wrath Of Pan 3 year old customarily wins on the front end, and by significant margins. Wednesday night he managed to claim a close victory after racing off the lead, but did so in record time over a sloppy track.

Hat-ies RC and owner-trainer Billy Downs drew the trailing post for the final, relegating them to seventh at the quarter (:26.4) as second-choice Touch Of Steel and Elliott Deaton set the fractions. Downs had the gelding in the outer flow by the half (:55.3), but needed to sweep three wide at the three-quarters (1:25.1) to make a charge at the leader.

Despite the slop, Hat-ies RC still managed to pace home in :28.2 to pick up his seventh consecutive victory, sixth straight at Hoosier Park. The time of 1:53.4 shaved a fifth off his lifetime best. Touch Of Steel finished three-quarters of a length back in second and Tom’s Wealth, the longest shot on the board at 55-1, was third.
