Hillbilly Hanover's win on July 13 at Yonkers Raceway was a Hall of Fame victory. When Hillbilly Hanover won a $34,000 conditioned race at Yonkers that night, it propelled his dam, Hattie, to automatic Hall of Fame broodmare status. Now 21 years old, Hattie is still an active broodmare at Hanover Shoe Farms.
The Hall of Fame provides for broodmares to be automatically inducted if their progeny includes one $1-million winner and two $500,000 winners, or a Horse of the Year and one $500,000 winner. With Hattie having also produced the $2-million winner Holborn Hanover and the $1-million winner Hyperion Hanover, when Hillbilly Hanover scored his July 13 victory and surpassed the $500,000 mark, that put the mare into the elite status. Haverford Hanover, another son of Hattie, could join the list as he is currently racing with $481,000 in earnings.
Hattie was bred by the late Richard Staley and campaigned by Hall of Fame horseman Doug Ackerman. A winner of more than a quarter-million dollars on the racetrack, Hattie is a daughter of Abercrombie out of the stakes-winning mare Albaquel. Hattie was purchased in 1997 by Hanover Shoe Farms. Now 21, she has a 2 year old, Howeabout Hanover, by Somebeachsomewhere, and a Well Said filly by her side while she is carrying yet another offspring by Well Said.
