Haughton winner Weingartner set to qualify

Return Home
July 11, 2012 | Print View

Peter Haughton Memorial winner Weingartner will return to action in Thursday morning's qualifiers at the Meadowlands Racetrack after missing time because of a pastern bone fracture.

The 3-year-old colt trotter will be driven by trainer Jimmy Takter, who still hopes the horse can be ready for the Hambletonian eliminations on July 28 at the Meadowlands. The $1.5 million Hambletonian final is Aug. 4.

Weingartner is unraced this year after winning three of nine starts and $290,206 in 2011. In addition to winning the $400,000 Haughton Memorial, he won divisions of the Champlain and Reynolds stakes for owners Christina Takter, John Fielding, Brixton Medical AB, and Louie Camara.

"He got a little P-1 fracture and we had to put a couple screws in his left front (leg),” Takter said. "He's doing well; I trained him last week with a (1):55 mile. I'm excited about him. He's coming back better than I expected, so we'll qualify him on Thursday and see where we go.”

Weingartner, purchased for $170,000 at the Standardbred Horse Sale, is a half-brother to 2010 Breeders Crown winner Martiniontherocks and his second dam, Anamosa Hanover, was the 2-year-old filly trotter of the year in 1987. (HRC)
