Longshot Hawaiian Drink made a splash Saturday night as she tunred in a huge stretch rally and pulled off a 1:53.2 upset in the $585,000 Three Diamonds stake for 2-year-old pacing lasses at Woodbine racetrack.
The Carl Jamieson trainee Break The News, with Mark MacDonald in the bike, shot to the early lead from the far outside, followed closely by Ginger And Fred and Tim Tetrick, who took charge just past a :26.2 first quarter. Break The News settled into the pocket spot with Twist N Clout (John Campbell) tucking into third as the field crossed the half-mile marker in :55.2, with Hawaiian Drink well off the pace in eighth at this stage.
Ginger And Fred looked primed to waltz home unchallenged, but was caught in the stretch by Jody Jamieson, piloting Special Sweetheart. They held the lead for only the blink of an eye before a masterful surge from Hawaiian Drink and Brian Sears in the final strides grabbed the victory by two and a quarter lengths. Special Sweetheart stayed for second, with Notjustaprettyface (Jason Brewer) coming out of nowhere for third and Twist N Clout fourth. Hawaiian Drink, a black daughter of I Am A Fool-B Passionate, is trained by Tracy Brainard for the Bulletproof Enterprises of Boca Raton, Florida. This was her fifth win in nine starts, and her first on Canadian soil after having placed third in her elimination split last week. "She was very good last week, finished very strong and had a lot of pace at the end of the mile," said Sears. "She was lucky enough to draw good, and I felt pretty good going into the race. "I was about sixth or seventh on the outside and had all intentions of going forward because the track seems biased, you really have to be up close. It was a pretty good first quarter, and (there was) a little more movement down the back side. I ended up third over, but she had plenty of go when it came time." (WEG)
