Harness Horsemen International (HHI) president Gene Oldford has announced HHI's 2008 Dominic Frinzi Man of the Year is retiring Pennsylvania Harness Racing Commission executive secretary Anton Leppler, while its Clyde Hirt Media Award goes to freelance writer and former Meadowlands media relations director Carol Hodes and its Appreciation Award goes to Florida Standardbred Breeders and Owners Association executive director Jane Murray.
Leppler worked for the Pennsylvania Commission for 14 years in the Enforcement and Off-Track Wagering divisions before becoming its executive secretary. His latest project is a DNA testing program in conjunction with the University of Pennsylvania at the New Bolton Center and the Pennsylvania Equine Toxicology and Research Laboratory at West Chester University.
Among Hodes' clients is the Standardbred Breeders and Owners Association of New Jersey. She has 35 years combined reporting and publicity experience. She was introduced to harness racing in the fall of 1976, shortly after the Meadowlands opened. She worked on the Meadowlands' publicity staff before becoming its media relations director. She has also been publicity director at Monmouth Park Throughbred track. (with files from HHI)
